Kaleidoscope in Photoshop

Objective: Render a Color, Symmetrically Balanced Composition using a photograph creatively manipulated and transformed using Photoshop application skills.

You will be graded on:
 -Effort/Use of time in class
-Composition using Symmetry/Balance
-Craftsmanship of selections and alignment
-Print Production (Did you post all 3 completed images?)
- Your Blog Reflection

First you will need to read about symmetry and balance, there is a link on my blog page on the bottom right called SYMMETRY.  Click and read.

Then you will need to choose or take a photographic image (That you took, not from the internet) or you may create an abstract image using paintbrushes and shape tools. You want something that has interesting shapes and colors. Feel free to change and edit images colors with Image>Adjustments

I have also put a link called Kaleidoscope that has a Tutorial on how to construct a basic kaleidoscope. You can use the  to help you but you will be putting your own creative twists on your finalized work. Don't just do the steps and call it a day.  Alter things, change colors, copy and paste sections to add more depth you your designs.

 

Process:  Create 3 different kaleidoscope designs using the same image (different cuts) to demonstrate different types of symmetry. Spend some time on these and try lots of new things (a minimum of one class on each). You may even research other ways to make kaleidoscope images in Photoshop. Once all three have been created you will blog about it. Include your original image to show me what you started with and tell me about your use of inverted, bi-axial, and/or radial symmetry as well as use of balance in your composition. This will show me you understand these concepts. Avoid using asymmetry for this project.

Requirements:  

•     10x10 @ 300 Res.
•     3 Final Kaleidoscope designs using the same image (different cuts)

DI 2: POLAROID MIXED MEDIA

Objective (Goal):  Create a mixed media self-portrait that uses a combination of Photoshop and other materials in a dynamic composition that has depth (foreground, middle, background).

Requirements:

·         Design at 8 x10, 300 resolution on Photoshop

·         Must be a self-portrait using an original image (very clear and high resolution if possible)

·         Must use at least 6-12 polaroids

·         Image can break out of the space if desired

·         Some Polaroids can be black and white versus color (can also de-saturate on Photohsop for minimal color or colorize using blend modes if desired)

·         Self-portrait image outside of the Polaroid squares must be deleted

·         Must have a foreground, mid-ground, and background

·         Background and/or foreground must include some form of fine art that you produce and take a picture of or scan in (cut paper, drawings, paintings, etc)

·        Must include typography (Song lyrics, a quote, etc.)

Vocabulary:

Mixed Media: the use of a variety of media(materials) in a work of art.

Composition: The arrangement of subjects/elements on a picture plane.

Rule of Thirds: A grid used to arrange a strong composition by placing a subject/element in 1-3 of the 4 spots the lines intersect.  Horizon lines should be placed above or below the horizontal lines of the grid.

Color Theory: Color theory (in artistic terms) is the concept of combining colors to reach the desired result. In website development this has proven to be extremely important for both psychological and physiological reasons.

Layering: To overlap 2 or more objects

Foreground:

the part of a view that is nearest to the observer

Mid-ground: the area in an image that is half way between the foreground and background

Background: the area or scenery behind the main object of contemplation

•         Generate a Photoshop document with a composition made up of one letter of the alphabet.
•         Identify and practice using basic Photoshop tools and keyboard shortcuts to help them achieve their design (transform, basic layers info, paint bucket, gradient, type tool, opacity)
•      Experiment with color theory to develop a successful layout while considering the design principles.

      You May:

Use both upper and lower case.

Use different fonts and typefaces.

Use textures and filters.

But,

 Do not use images off the internet. Create your own design!

Digital Imaging 1: Digital Painting

Objective:
